INTREP360 INTELLIGENCE REPORT
03.06.2026
March 6th, 2026
Greetings! It is Day 7 of the war in Iran. No, the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) has not been sunk despite Iran claiming—as Tehran has now done for five days in a row—that it is at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
Nor did Iran shoot down a USAF F-15E as Ali Larijani—Iran’s secretary of the Supreme National Security Council—claimed earlier today.

Iran did at some point in time—it appears—to shoot down one of their own MiG 29s. Safe to say, just as it was pointless to believe “Baghdad Bob” during the Iraq War, it is a waste of time to believe anything “Tehran Ali” says.
Iran—clearly desperate—is resorting to propaganda. Even the dead Ayatollah Ali Khamenei got in the act by posting on X.
So much for dead men telling no (tall) tales. Friday night humor aside, it is telling that what’s left of the Iranian regime is hiding behind a dead Khamenei. That tells us—in all likelihood—they fear the U.S. & Israel finding out who is in charge.
***
There is a lot to fear. The U.S.—as promised—is continuing to surge military assets into the Middle East. Earlier today, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) carrier transited the Suez Canal & is now sailing in the Red Sea.
Plus, the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) is being ordered to deploy to the Mediterranean. When it arrives, there will be three powerful U.S. Navy carrier strike groups operating in the eastern Mediterranean & Indian Ocean.
Meanwhile—back on the battlefield—as Operation Epic Fury heads into Day 8, CENTCOM continues to diminish the Iranian threat—aggressively targeting ballistic missile & drone launchers and the Iranian navy.
But while all eyes are focused on Iran, tensions are coming to a head between Hungary & Ukraine over Russian oil.
At issue is the flow of oil through the Friendship pipeline which runs through Ukraine. Hungary continues to purchase Russian oil; Ukraine continues to target Russian funding sources to sustain their war in Ukraine. The two came to a head at the Druzhba pipeline.
Let’s get started.

Parliamentary elections in Hungary are scheduled to take place on April 12th. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s 16-year reign in power appears to be in trouble as Péter Magyar’s Tisza party has emerged as a major challenger to Orbán’s Fidesz party.
A poll conducted by Zavecz Research in late February & released on Tuesday showed that “50% of decided voters supported Tisza, up from 48% in January, while 38% backed Fidesz, down from 39% a month earlier.”
A second poll, conducted by the Publicus Institute, was released on Wednesday. It showed 47% of decided voters supporting Tisza & 39% backing Fidesz. That’s an electoral wipeout in the making.

Orbán’s plan to narrow the gap? Apparently, to create a distraction. An international crisis that threatens the security and welfare of Hungarian citizens. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fits that description.
There is no love lost between these two leaders. Orbán has consistently blocked European Union funds for Ukraine & opposed its accession into NATO, arguing that Kyiv cannot join the alliance & that Europe should stop funding the war.
The so-called Friendship Pipeline became his distraction tool of choice. Orbán chose to escalate an energy dispute by falsely claiming that Ukraine was weaponizing winter, thereby denying Hungarians fuel they needed to heat their homes in the winter.
On February 23rd, Orbán vetoed the European Union’s 20th sanctions package against Russia. He later blocked a vital €90 billion EU aid package for Ukraine. According to a Kyiv Independent source, “Budapest intends to maintain its stance until oil deliveries through [the] Druzhba [pipeline] resume.”
Then on Thursday, Orbán posted this message on X: “There will be no deals, no compromise. We will break the Ukrainian oil blockade by force. Hungary’s energy will soon flow again through the Friendship pipeline.”

Orbán’s threat to use force to remove a ‘Ukrainian oil blockage’ was soon countered by Zelensky’s rejoinder—what many interpreted as a not-so-subtle veiled threat—to “simply give the address of that person [Orbán] to our Armed Forces—our guys can call him and speak to him in their own language.”

On February 25th, Orbán accused Ukraine of plotting to sabotage Hungary’s energy infrastructure. In a move that had all the hallmarks of a Russian false flag operation, Orbán ordered “the reinforcement of the protection of [Hungary’s] critical energy infrastructure.”
Soldiers were deployed; equipment staged & commanders were ordered to repel any attacks near key energy facilities. Orbán then solemnly—while fooling no one—declared “I have listened to the reports of the national security services, I see that Ukraine is preparing further actions to disrupt the functioning of the Hungarian energy system.”

The Friendship Pipeline—also known as the Druzhba Pipeline—is one of the world’s longest oil pipelines, transporting oil from Russia to various parts of Europe since the early 1960s. The southern branch runs through Ukraine, splitting in Uzhgorod into Druzhba 1 which continues into Slovakia & Druzhba 2 which continues into Hungary.

More than 85% of Hungary’s crude oil imports come from Russia via the Druzhba pipeline, and nearly all of Slovakia’s supply. Both countries are landlocked & remain the only EU members still receiving Russian crude via an exemption to EU sanctions.

While other NATO/EU nations chose alternate means to secure energy after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Hungary & Slovakia chose dependency upon cheap oil with Russia. As the Atlantic Council stated, Budapest opted for “a choice rather than a necessity.” Orbán played the short game & now he is experiencing the consequences of that decision.
Like a drug dealer—Russia created a dependency, & in the process, purchased a pair of no votes in NATO & the EU to further their goal of destroying NATO.

On Thursday, Zelensky told reporters that, “Ukraine can repair the Friendship oil pipeline in a month or a month and a half, although it sees no technical or safety reason to do so. I will be frank: my position, which is shared with European leaders, is that I would not repair the pipeline”
In more direct terms, Kyiv has zero interest in facilitating Russian oil deliveries to Hungary or Slovakia, stating “This is Russian oil.” Or at least as long as Russia continues to attack Ukraine, suggesting “repairs would only be possible during a ceasefire.”
***
Simple facts:
· Russia has been at war now with Ukraine for four years. The Kremlin’s principal source of income to fund the war comes from oil revenues;
· Hungary & Slovakia continue to purchase oil from Russia—at discounted prices—funding Russia’s war against Ukraine; and
· Ukraine has been targeting Russia’s primary source of revenue—oil —via drones & missiles for years by striking oil refineries, shadow fleet vessels, and their means of delivery including tankers & pipelines.

From Zelensky’s perspective, you reap what you sow. The pipeline has been suspended since January 27th following what Kyiv says was a Russian attack on pumping installations in western Ukraine. Reuters reported that the strike was a “rare case of Russian forces attacking an oil pipeline through which Russia supplies oil to Europe.” But was this a ‘rare case’ or a deliberate action? We are more inclined to say the latter.
That said, it comes as no surprise that Ukraine wants to shut down this revenue stream—especially one funded by NATO/EU member states—Hungary & Slovakia. Kyiv has frequently attacked the Druzhba pipeline deep into Russian territory—in the Bryansk region—and as recently as September 2025.
***
If Moscow did bomb the pipeline in Ukraine, then the Kremlin got the response they wanted from Orbán. A direct confrontation between a NATO/EU member state and Ukraine and a second front that could tear apart the NATO alliance.
***
But could this be more nefarious than that? Could this be about keeping Orbán in power? Is Orbán & Moscow in cahoots?

Are they creating a crisis to mobilize the military in order to ‘protect’ Hungary from Ukraine, to establish martial law, & postpone elections indefinitely?
This is how dictators are installed. Look no further than Belarus & the sorry case of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko.
***
In what should come as no surprise to anyone, the Kremlin has instructed a team of political technologists to interfere in the upcoming April 12th elections in Hungary in order to keep Orbán in power.
Election interference is what Russia does best, including in Georgia, Moldova, Romania, the U.S. & now Hungary.

Hungarian Energy Ministry State Secretary Gábor Czepek issued an ultimatum to Kyiv today. He gave Ukraine three days to resume the transit of Russian oil or allow a group of inspectors to enter the country to inspect the Druzhba oil pipeline.
Or else what?
That remains to be seen. In the meantime, Russia continues to strike Ukraine with ballistic missiles and drones – with funds generated by the sale of oil.
***
The FSB—Putin’s spy agency—loves it when a plan comes together. It might just be coming together in Budapest & in the middle of NATO’s backyard.
